Janet Byrne Thabit graduated from DePauw University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts (in Mathematics and Business Administration) and from Loyola University (Chicago) School of Law in 1995 with a Juris Doctorate, Cum Laude. At Loyola, she was a member and editor-at-large of the Loyola Law Journal. Ms. Thabit was admitted to practice law in Illinois in 1995, in the United States District Court of the Northern District of Illinois and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1998. Ms. Thabit was also admitted to practice before the United State Supreme Court in 2009.

EXPERIENCE: After law school, Ms. Thabit clerked for the full panel of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. After her clerkship, she associated with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (LLP) where she primarily worked in the litigation department, while also advising on bankruptcy, corporate due diligence, communications and state tax matters. Ms. Thabit has represented U.S. and international companies, as well as their top executives on complex, regulatory investigations and litigation matters. Her experience includes all phases of litigation (including extensive international electronic discovery, privilege and privacy matters) in both state and federal courts. Ms. Thabit has argued pre-trial discovery and dispositive motions in state and federal courts, has participated in mediation and arbitrations, and has argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Thabit’s subject matter experience includes issues in the financial services industry, corporation and director’s and officer’s liability, joint-venture disputes, class actions, whistle-blower claims, patent licensing disputes and state taxation matters. She has worked on securities related derivative suits and class actions asserting claims under the 1933 and 1934 Acts, and completed investigatory submissions to the SEC, NASD, and FINRA.

Ms. Thabit has actively represented pro bono clients including assistance with guardianships, landlord-tenant issues, and a post-conviction petition. She received Skadden, Arp’s Pro Bono Awards in 2000, 2002 and 2008.

At Matuszewich & Kelly, Ms. Thabit concentrates on litigation matters, small business transactions, estate planning, and government and township law.

MEMBERSHIPS: Ms. Thabit is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. She has served on the junior board of the Chicago Bar Foundation and is a member of the Foundation’s “Access to Justice” initiative to ensure equal access to justice for low-income litigants. In her community, and local schools, she has held several volunteer positions, including team manager of her son’s baseball team. She currently serves as team manager for her daughter’s travel soccer club and serves as a religious education teacher for her church.
