With the technology that we have today, companies such as Google have created cars that can drive themselves.  It is only a matter of time before automated driving systems are easily accessible to the consumer.  With the unknown risks of an automated driving system, it may not seem all that surprising that municipalities would want to ban such systems from their roads.  It appears as though the state legislature foresaw this possibility and took preemptive actions.  Therefore, on June 1, 2018, a new law goes into effect in Illinois which bans a local unit of government from enacting an ordinance that would prohibit the use of automated driving systems on its roadways.
